There’s something magical about stumbling upon a place that hasn’t been plastered across Instagram yet. Café aux Délices is one of those rare spots—hidden on a quiet corner of Rue Saint-Amable, this intimate espresso bar feels like a secret shared among neighbors.

The Discovery

We found it by accident, really. We were exploring the winding streets of Vieux-Montréal, letting the cobblestones guide us rather than following any map. The smell of freshly roasted coffee pulled us in first, followed by the soft murmur of French conversation.

The space is small—maybe 20 seats at most—with exposed brick walls and vintage mirrors that reflect soft afternoon light. The owner, Michel, has been running the place for nearly 20 years, and his passion for coffee is evident in every detail.

What to Order

Their espresso is exceptional. Single origin, carefully sourced, prepared with precision. We tried a pour-over from Ethiopia that was bright and fruity—nothing like the harsh coffee you might expect from a café that doesn’t cater to tourists.

The pastries come from a neighboring boulangerie. A buttery croissant or a pain au chocolat pairs perfectly with an americano, and at just CAD 3.50, it’s a steal.

The Vibe

This is where you go to read, write, or simply exist without the pressure of performing for social media. Locals work on laptops. Students study. A woman sketches in her notebook. The background music—a mix of French jazz and indie—creates the perfect ambiance.

Michel knows regular customers by name. He remembers how you take your coffee. He’s interested in where you’re from and why you’re in the city. It’s hospitality in its most genuine form.

Getting There

From the Vieux-Port, head up Rue Saint-Paul and turn onto Rue Saint-Amable. Look for the small green awning. No fancy signage, no queue of tourists—just a door that opens onto something special.
