Most visitors to Montreal know about Mount-Royal. But if you venture just 30 minutes north, there’s a trail that locals guard like a secret—a place where birdsong outnumbers voices and the forest feels genuinely wild.
The Bois-de-Belle-Rivière
This protected forest spans 200 hectares in Sainte-Sophie, just north of Laval. Unlike the popular trails around the city, it feels untouched. The walking paths are well-maintained but quiet, the canopy is dense, and wildlife is everywhere.
We visited on a Saturday morning in early March, when the snow was still patchy but the first signs of spring were breaking through. The parking lot had maybe five cars. We saw no one on the trail for hours.
What to Expect
The main loop is about 6 kilometers—accessible for most fitness levels but long enough to feel like a real escape. The terrain is gentle, with roots and rocks to navigate but nothing too technical.
In spring, wildflowers start appearing. In summer, the shade keeps things cool even when Montreal swelters. Fall is spectacular—the maples turn brilliant gold and red. Even in winter, when the trails are snow-covered, there’s a quiet beauty to the forest.
We encountered deer, a few songbirds we couldn’t quite identify, and the kind of silence that makes you slow your breathing.
Why It Matters
There’s something about being in a forest that’s genuinely unhurried. No scenic overlooks designed for photos. No signs telling you where to stand. Just trees, sky, earth, and the sound of your own footsteps.
Our kids ran ahead on the trail, discovering things—a fallen log, a patch of moss, animal tracks in the snow. No screens. No distractions. Just curiosity and presence.
